In 1986 Brian Godfrey (G. and F. Scaffolding) saw a lack of weather and debris protection for scaffolding. He discovered that scaffolders were putting up sheeting themselves, a job which they despised with an outcome that was very hit and miss. Consequently Brian and Jim Farmer (Puma Marketing) decided to start up Duraclad Limited, offering a unique service to its customers of supply and fix scaffold cladding using the unique Duraclad product. Antony Godfrey, son of Brian Godfrey, worked for Duraclad Limited from start up and in 1990 decided to set up A. B. Godfrey, specialising in smaller domestic scaffold cladding.
By the mid 1990's A. B. Godfrey had outgrown Duraclad Limited, thus, Duraclad Limited still working on large contracts, supplied materials to complete the contract with A. B. Godfrey supplying the labour, as well as continuing to complete its own contracts. In 2000, Duraclad Limited finished with the construction side of the company to concentrate their efforts on other aspects of their business.
In 2002, A. B. Godfrey changed its name to A Bit on the Side. The name was synonymous with the nature of Antony who had earlier christened his home with the same name following an extension added to the side of the property. A Bit on the Side therefore also seemed appropriate as the company name - scaffold cladding is “A Bit on the Side” of a scaffold structure.
In 2005, A Bit on the Side became a limited company and was taken over by Antony's wife, Tanya Mabbs-Godfrey, allowing Antony to concentrate on other business projects.
In June 2007, following Antony's increasingly high level of commitment to A Bit on the Side Ltd, Antony took the decision to put his other business projects behind him and join forces with Tanya to provide improved services under one company.
Today, A Bit on the Side Ltd is bigger and better than any of its predecessors have ever been. We now provide a Scaffold Cladding and Debris Mesh service as well as the erection of Safety Nets. We have moved to a new unit to enable us to carry increased levels of stock and make the whole operation even more effective and efficient.
With numerous years of experience we can offer our customers service and advice which we believe cannot be rivalled.
We feel that we are in the fore front of scaffold cladding and are always striving to improve our techniques, materials and the service we offer using future technologies that we can adapt for your company needs.
